Wee jinky Never seen a more gifted dribbler in scotland. not many players would deliberately beat the same player going past with ease for fun... the god of my youth..

I player ahead of his time. He was great in a world where you could kick phuck out of someone. Imagine him in today's game? He'd be at Barca. But Bestie still wins for me.

My wife's uncle (a big Celtic fan) played for Chelski against Real in the CWC final in 68 I think? He marked Gento, a legend of Real, by his own admission he kicked 7 shades of s**t out of him over two games (it was a draw and replayed) yet at the end Gento swapped shirts with him. He said he felt gutted that he had been such an animal to a legendary player, who bore no grudge at the end. He has some great stories.

Just had a wee google. That final/replay was season 70-71. Gento retired in 71 he was roughly 38yrs young - wow.

There have been many great players who have played here, Best was special , Dalglish, Lubo and Larsson were magnificent, even Laudrup and Gasgoine are worth a mention. However, Jimmy Johnstone was in my opinion the most talented footballer to have played in this league. Packaged into a tiny 5'4" frame he had it all, he could beat defenders for fun, time and time and again, he was booted all over the pitch and got up and done it all again, amazingly he scored goals with head and feet. In the days before the comprehensive stats that we read today, he would have had a huge number of assists and his time on the ball was well above average. JJ was a one off and I doubt that there will be another like him. He could have played for any team in the world, but he played for us, he was Celtic player and Celtic fan and as the song says he was the "The Uncrowned King of Football"

Absolute belter of a player. Its the strange thing about Scotland. It has saved a couple of players in terms of it has helped them realise their full potential. At £650k he was a steal, but I have long been convinced that had he not come to Celtic he might not have become the player that he did. Something about that whole arrangement just seemed to work on every front.

I've just spoke to John, he was mid 20's at the time and according to him in the peak of his career. You are spot on Gento was nearing the end of a great career and John stills classes it as the toughest game he ever had.
I asked him how a young fella from Murderwell who was a big Celtic fan fell through the net and got missed. His answer. He would not have been goog enough to have got in that Celtic team so choosing to leave Scotland for Chelski was not something he gave a seconds thought to. Imagine that nowadays, a player not thinking he was good enough for Celtic but good enough for Chelski............................changed days indeed...........................

Lubo for me as well (Zidane says he was the most gifted two footed player he ever saw so that's good enough for me), my da would say a toss up between Johnstone or Baxter.

Tony - You sure Maradona played at Hampden? If he did then he's the best to set foot on a pitch here, if not then Zidane.
My top 2 players ever.

I think its a loaded question and tough for some. But for me, King Kenny is my choice. I know Jinky and Best were superb on their game and their wizardry will always be remembered. But as i've said before....When Benkenbaur, Cruyff, Platina and Keegan pick you in the best ever British 11, then that says it all...........hail hail King Kenny pure genious! hail hail

I had the great pleasure of watching Pele for 3 years and to think you can mention 2 lads one from the Glasgow area and one from Belfast in the same sentence as the great one says it all about them. Yes Jimmy and George were very special.
Baxter in his day was fantastic another career ruined by drink but my favourite player of all time "not saying the best" was Bertie Auld what a character he took after his wee maw.
Good god when ye think back,Cooke,Law,Galzean,Crerand, all the Lions,St John,Henderson,Lorimer,Bremner, the Gray's you could go on all night. Scotland was like a conveyor belt for footballers,ah blame Atari.

Only saw Celtic from '83 onwards and would have to say Henrik Larsson, if it was to include players not seen in the flesh then Jimmy Johnstone
seen him in a few videos and used to meet him when he worked in Lafferty's in Govan on my way to school and he would always say hello.
