TOMMY
THE SUN SHONE DOWN THAT MORNING
TO WELCOME IN THE DAY
AND GOD AWOKE TO PRAYER
AS THERE WAS A FOOTBALL GAME TO PLAY
HE'D NEED A TEAM SO GALLANT
A SIDE SO STRONG AND BRAVE
WITH BROTHER WALFRID AS HIS ASSISTANT
THEY'D PLAY THE CELTIC WAY
TO PICK A TEAM GOD PONDERED
WHO SHOULD GET TO PLAY
AND SO RONNIE SIMPSONS SAFE HANDS
WOULD GUARD THE GOALS THAT DAY
NOW HE'D NEED DEFENDERS
SOME MEN WHO'D BE SO BRAVE
SO JOHN CUSHLEY WAS AWARDED
THE JERSEY HE SO CRAVED
BIG JOCK STEIN STOOD BESIDE HIM
A GIANT AMONG THE REST
HE'D LEAD THIS TEAM AS CAPTAIN
AND BE THE VERY BEST
GOD KNEW HE'D NEED TO SCORE SOME GOALS
IF HIS TEAM WERE TO SUCCEED
SO HE CALLED UPON WEE JINKY
WITH ALL THE SKILL HE'D NEED
AND JOHNNY DOYLE WAS READY
JUST LIKE HE ALWAYS WAS
BRICK WALLS COULD NEVER STOP HIM
WHEN HE WAS PLAYING FOR THE BHOYS
AND IN THE MIDDLE OF THE PARK
GODS CHOICE WAS LONG AND GREAT
AND SO BIG BOBBY MURDOCH WAS AT HAND
TO GRACE THE FIELD OF PLAY
YOUNG PHIL O'DONNELL WAS NEXT IN LINE
WHEN GOD ASKED HIM TO PLAY
AND THOUGH HE WAS THE YOUNGEST
HE KNEW THAT HE MUST PLAY
SO GOD WOULD NEED TO SHIELD YOUNG PHIL
WITH A MAN WHO TWISTS AND TURNS
THE ONLY MAN SO WORTHY
WAS CELTICS TOMMY BURNS
FOR HE'D TAKEN PHIL TO PARKHEAD
WHEN HE WAS STILL A BHOY
AND WITH TRAINING , LOVE AND GUIDANCE
PHILS FOOTBALL BECAME A JOY
SO NOW THEY'LL PLAY FOREVER
WITH TRUE LOVE FOR THE GAME
AND OUR FOOTBALL WORLD IS DARKER
AND WONT EVER BE THE SAME
FOR GOD HAS CHOSEN WISELY
A SIDE FOR ME AND YOU
TO KEEP OUR HEARTS ON FIRE
WITH A LOVE THAT IS SO TRUE
AND WHEN GOD COMES A CALLING
FOR OUR MOTHERS, DADS, DAUGHTERS AND SONS
YOU KNOW THEYLL GET TO WEAR THE HOOPS
BESIDE THE BRILLIANT TOMMY BURNS
AND IN THE YEARS THAT FOLLOW
THAT SIDE WILL GROW AND GROW
AND WE WILL ALL REMEMBER
ALL THE BHOYS WE USED TO KNOW
WITH HAIR LIKE BURNING FIRE
AND A HEART BIGGER THAN MOST
TOMMY BURNS REMEMBERED
SHALL BE OUR FONDEST TOAST

Too young to have seen you play, but ive heard so many stories from my dad, We will always be reminded of you on the pitch with the many youngsters you have discovered for the club, A truly great man who didn't deserve to go, Enjoy paradise in the sky Tommy, The leagues for you!

Your legacy will live on at CP, your memory will live on in our hearts. My families fthoughts and prayers are with your family at this time. YNWA Tommy Burns RIP. Hail Hail

Through the tears the other day I got to wondering why Tommy Burns meant so much to me and why I felt I knew this man so well even though we'd never met. That bit was easy to explain - Tommy was a man who was so obviously without arrogance or ego that we all felt he was one of us.....because he truly believed that himself. As for what him so special. I realise that he's taught me that you can always become better, no matter what stage you're at in life. He would have been shocked to have been told as a headstrong 20-something that in less than 20 years he would become an ambassador for his family, his club and his faith who commanded love, affection and respect from all sections of Scottish society. Tommy was an excellent footballer. But his achievements on the pitch came to be eclipsed by his role beyond the football park. His humility, faith and service to people mark him out as a truly great man. He is the "Celtic Way" at is best.
My heart cries for his family. I hope their greath faith can console them in this dark hour.....that and perhaps the thought of TB messing around during God's team talk.......

I left Glasgow to move to Detroit in 1984 but some of my fondest memories of paradise were of watching Tommy play. A true legend who will always have a special place in my heart.

Tommy, I was one of the fortunate ones. I had the joy of being able to watch you play for our beloved Celtic. You lived the dream for us and it was a pleasure to watch you on the football field that you graced so well.
Unfortunately I never got to meet you my friend but, like most others, felt I knew you so well.
This world you leave behind will be a lesser place without you and for that I have grieved but knowing you are in a better place, probably tinkering with Gods formation for your debut in the skies, eases the pain somewhat.
Tommy, as someone said, when you are forgotten you truly are dead. That will never be the case with a great man like yourself. You will live on forever in our hearts and minds.
You, my friend, really never will walk alone. R.I.P Tommy.

Well known was your passion and desire for a team from the east end
Your walk and talk with people saw a smile that could comfort and mend
So what are we going to do now that you are gone and have left us alone
Family Faith and Football gives us a purpose and a goal we aim to clone
So goodbye our Tommy a man so loved and so dear
Seperation may split us but it has no regrets nor has it fear
For one day when Our Lord calls with the trumpet so loud
We will know where to find you, you will be on the whitest cloud
Hail Hail Tommy

I will always remember the night I first met you, 10 years old being a mascot for Celtic on a European night, the place was buzzing everyone serious and concentrated but you took the time out to say a few words to me even though you were warming up for the game, that made me feel so proud.
God Bless you Tommy, you will always be remembered. RIP

I never had the good fortune of meeting you Tam however, just to see you play, manage and coach the team, was something I can tell my kids about.
You are Celtic and Celtic are you.
My sincere condolences to your wife and children.
