Could a fellow Tim please tell me if the antivirus software i have on my PC, Norton 2007, is sufficient enough, has a firewall etc... to protect my pc?

Have been using it for 12 months+ with no problems whatsoever but has just, this evening, switched broadband provider from BT to Talk Talk and whilst installing new modem etc... Talk Talk tried to get me to sign up for their own Anti-virus, firewall thingy which A) costs money B) requires me to remove my Norton..... They stated they can't guarantee free support if my PC gets problems etc.....

Sounds a bit shite to me.... Do i have anything to worry about?

Thanks in advance

Norton is a good program and I'd stick with that mate. These companies are just trying to pocket a little extra cash, but Norton should protect you and you won't need their free support. Besides, if you do get yourself a virus, we seem to have a fair amount of computer buffs on here that can give you all the support you need. :thumb:

If its a usb speedtouch modem i would stick with Norton. The usb modems leave your pc open to all sorts of intrusions, Norton has a good firewall. Best advice would be to ditch the modem and buy a router, routers have there own firewalls, so that will give you an extra layer of protection from the web. This is the router I use with my talktalk broadband. PC world are doing a deal on it. http://www.pcworld.co.uk/martprd/store/pcw_page.jsp?BV_SessionID=@@@@0652603000.120666911 1@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccccadedjiefjddcflgceggdhhmdfho.0&page=Product&fm=null&sm=null&tm=null&sku=173891&category_oid=

Im with talktalk too m8, and they use f-secure right? Well thats not a bad product either, but if you have a suby with norton then there is no point changing.

Any problems with talktalk and setting things up just pm me.

ps. There support is crap so I wouldnt worry about that side of things. It is free broadband after all. That said the connection is good, mines hasnt dropped out for about 1 year. ( since I got the router ).

Norton is an excellent piece of software but it is a big memory hog,

I use Avast (free) as my antivirus, I have a wireless netgear router, (these have hardware firewalls) I also use zonealarm as a software firewall.

Personally I would remove norton. I really dont believe in paying for software when there are free just as good or better alternatives out there.

I would second that coth, I use Avast too. Not had an infection since. If he has paid for Norton he may as well stick with it though. You are right enough about the resource hog on the cpu m8, it was a killer. That was the reason I got rid of it, plus the fact it never picked up a Trojan/key logger.

For oldgregg. I forgot to mention, you were on BT right. So you would have had a router anyway. You can use that with Talktalk m8. As long as you have a BT type phone connection and not a cable one it will be fine.

Keep using Norton till your current subscription runs out, then look into getting a router, and get AVG or Avast!

spycatcher is a good firewall and it along with AVG are both free.

I used to always buy Norton in the early days not knowing any better. But i would NEVER pay for any anti virus or firewall again. Plenty of free stuff on the net just as good.
