The big talking point on Clyde last night was the upcoming visit of Rangers to the City of Manchester to play the away leg of their Champion's League fixture against United.

The fear is of course, that Rangers fans will reprise their riotous drunken behaviour of two years ago, but a caller to the programme was quick to come on and defend the club and their fans.

He trotted out the usual excuses about aggressive policing, and how it was only a small minority causing the trouble, and that it was unfair to tar all Rangers fans with the same brush.

He said he had gone to Manchester to support his team, was completely sober not having had anything alcoholic to drink, and then gave an insight into the thought processess of at least one Rangers fan.

His comments were presumably to demonstrate police aggressiveness.

He said, "We were talking to some police officers and were getting the better of them verbally so they drew their batons!"

I'm not absolutely sure what he meant by his comments or why he felt the need to 'get the better of the police verbally', but it did seem like pretty aggressive behaviour, although not by the police.

And that was a sober Rangers fan…alledgedly!

Graham Spiers then replied that Rangers fans cannot go on being in denial about where the responsibility lies for their awful behaviour.

He pointed out how they had caused mayhem in every European and British city that has had the misfortune to have them as visitors, and that in every case both the club and their support had tried to deflect blame onto the police.

On one famous occasion an opinion was put forward that it was in fact not Rangers fans who had caused the trouble, suggesting it may have been Chelsea casuals!

It is to be hoped that this game in Manchester passes without incident, for that city has suffered enough at the hands of the Rangers supporting drunken hordes, but that would seem a forlorn hope given the many previous experiences of Rangers' fans disgusting, riotous behaviour.

I can't remember the last time Celtic had a left back that every Celtic fan was happy with.

Many players have tried and not quite succeeded in this position over a long number of years, but to my eyes at least, Emilio Izaguirre has given every indication that he may be the answer.

Against Motherwell last week, he was quick, agressive, sure in the tackle, confident looking on the ball, and able to find a team mate regularly with his passing.

This coming weekend's game with Hearts at Parkhead is traditionally a tough fixture, so we will need not only all of Izaguirre's defensive qualities, but also every player in the team to be at their best.

There has been much gnashing of teeth, fervent argument, some contentment and a lot of disappointment at the absence of a Blue Chip or Marquee signing. There were many names mentioned, the most excitement and subsequent disappointment surrounded our efforts to sing Bellamy and Keane.
As the window creaked shut and we were left with only the draughts of disappointment at their loss we need to be realistic and ask, can we really attract these type of players never mind afford them if they are willing to come?
It would seem to me that certain player’s public declaration of loving and wanting to play for the club dissipates like early morning mist on a summers day when a cheque book is produced by a wealthier club and the realisation dawns that they will be playing in the SPL kicks in.
In the end we have accumulated an assortment of players from every corner of the globe, some we had known, most we had not. We embarked upon our European campaign in my view without addressing the glaring deficiencies in our team that a cat in the road, or even one dumped in a wheelie bin, would be able to pinpoint we left unattended to.
The result was an argument between Andy Walker and Lennon over Walkers assertion that we had left the tournament with a wimper, Lenny took exception to this although to be honest I think the majority of Celtic men and women would agree we hardly left it with a ferocious roar.
On to the EL and still the main problems the aforementioned cats could have seen were not totally sorted. This may be due to difficulties getting the players we required, it may have been that we couldn’t afford them, it could have been that they didn’t fancy us, the result for me was the worst away performance in Europe I have yet seen and i have been away with the team on thirteen separate occasions.
That is all behind us now, we have no European nights to look forward to and hopefully this will be eased with us watching the Gers getting hammered, but knowing they jammy gets I have a feeling they will do better than we think.
The domestic treble and in particular the league are our priority and we should be able to take that to the wire, the team are not streets ahead of Rangers, in fact some would argue they are stronger for having been over the course etc etc. I think we have a technically superior team, but after Utrecht i fear for their bottle and mental capacity. Neil knows that he cannot fail, that three in a row with Rangers still financially gubbed, yet still spending as much as us, how do they do it, is a one way ticket to Job seekers allowance.
Everything has gone a bit flat with the euro tankings and the failure to sing a blue chip player, we are top of the league and can at times look great, but we all know that the test comes in October, if we lose to Rangers at home, then our worst fears will be realised. I think we have a hard fight and Smith will want, as will all of the press, to go out on top. I have a belief that a certain young Irishman will assist us to stop this tragedy from occurring, he had better , for if we fail this year and they achieve three in a row with the state they are in will constitute the bottom of a barrel we have been descending for the last five years.
It is time for us to stand up and be counted, there can be no more excuses, and in the name of Dawkins can we stop players spouting what they are going to do to then papers and keep it for the park, especially as those most vocal have not exactly set the heather alight yet, in fact, it isn’t even tepid yet, so shut up and stop giving the rangers adoring press sticks with which to beat us.
